Perfect Mismatch
After a gap of years, i happened to go to listen to the Light Music Solo at the Inter-hostel Lit-soc competition here. As expected, it dint start on time and when junta started to perfrom, it was utter chaos.
Nobody who played the guitar, were able to have it tuned properlly. There was a mismatch in the tuning of most guitars, lest we worry about what they played on them. Wrong notes were rather common and the people who sang along had no clue of what is the pitch the guitar was tuned to.
I could barely manage to sit for about less than an hour.
If you are confident enough to perform in public, but dont have the faintest idea of how to tune the instrument you are playing, you might as well find the nearest well to jump in.

To be honest, from what I've heard in LM and WM groups, the instruments are mostly good, the vocalists suck. Many marginally OK vocalists are celebrated and worshipped in the insti -- in frustration.
Of course, there are singers good on the absolute scale; but the top instrumentalists can probably eat them for an evening snack.

Another thing is that the LM -- and WM -- are quite westernised and to be honest in India serious western music, serious meaning concerts, with a place and time devoted for the music, isn't widespread and not many in the insti are familiar with all that. What they hear is the tapes played when doing five other things at once, or tidbits of the latest albums played as they flip channels on the TV.
There are some people from Bangalore, perhaps, who have listened to concerts, and some who, having studied western classical music and maybe forms like jazz, have some grasp of harmonic music.
